MUSIC

NATHAN HAWES

Can you talk about yourself please ?

Well, I grew up at a place called the Central Coast , about an hour drive from Sydney. I had a pretty normal childhood I guess, a lot of it was spent around the ocean and playing a lot of music from an early age. My dad taught me how to play the guitar from an early age and from then i guess I've never stopped.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning besides checking your phone?

I try to not look at my phone as much as possible ,when not sleeping I will try to get out to the water early and then see where the day takes me really.

You’re currently touring Australia. How does it feel to be on the road?

The road is starting to feel more like home every day, when I was younger and I would see touring artists come through it was always what I inspired to do. The whole only spending one to two days in each town or city makes everyday new destination an adventure and to try and soak as much of the city as possible.

When and How did you start singing?

Well I've been playing the guitar since I was about 7 and when I was about 16 i wanted to incorporate both my voice and guitar into one and start writing songs and expressing myself in a sense. Then busking felt most natural, playing in the streets then verging towards cafes, restaurants and live venues all came within good time.

My Van!

I think I would have to say my van in a quite place, that is where I write a lot of my music, on my own. I feel like I can get the most out of my head when I'm alone and in my own world, and then transfer the energy that inspires me to write about whatever I am feeling,  that sounds real hippy or something but I guess that is the truth.-

I'm thinking most probably a guitar, there are so many different ways to play a guitar and it is such a broad instrument to express yourself in so many different ways so yeah guitar.-

I like looking at a lot of art and making art, mainly graphic design, I like having a heavy hand in what happens with art work for my releases etc.. so yeah I've always been into having an involvement in those process and having an out come of something that is both visually pleasing and intriguing. Blacklist studios designed the new EP artwork which turned out being exactly what i was looking for and what I am trying to say with this new record. the faded background of the hills and the bright stripes of colour contrast showing out with the old and in with the new.

I think spending the early morning at the beach wether you are surfing, swimming, walking etc, i think there is no better way to start a day, so having a clean ocean makes us extremely fortunate to be able to make our way to the coast and have healthy lifestyles.

I don't think I will ever have one favourite artist just because I'm consistently growing and changing as an artist so my inspiration changes and especially when listening to music a lot of it depends on how I am feeling at the time.

Our theme is ocean in this issue. So, as an Australian, what effects does ocean have on you?

Who is your favorite artist? Why?

Constantly Growing
